Jeez
I stopped reading mail just before Siggraph and logged in
about a month later to find 3.5 MEGABYTES of mail. Took me
five days to catch up. Here's a mass of responses to
questions from the list.
"Buffers too Small" error
This is a bug which is only present in the Toaster 3.5 update of
Modeler. Those of you who purchased the standalone version
should not have this problem. There are a variety of things you
can do to get the buffers to be correctly initialized, but
they are too complex to list. Play around, you may get lucky.
A patch of some sort should be available soon.
No moving preview in DblNTSC
There is no moving preview in DblNTSC. Period. The problem has
to do with there being a moving preview BUTTON on these screens,
which should not be there. The fix will involve removing the
button, so the workaround is to not use it.
Modeler doesn't work on the Picasso
This is true, and it has to do with problems with the Picasso.
Do NOT use the changescreen program from VillageTronics to
promote Modeler. Changescreen has a severe bug which prevents
Modeler from working on screens that it has opened. Also, because
of the way Modeler draws lines, it has to be done by writing
directly into chip ram rather than using the blitter. The
blitter will not do what I need, at least for now. Older versions
of the Picasso software used to periodically copy from chip ram
to its display memory. Newer versions don't seem to do this
anymore and so nothing in the modeling area is visible. The
Picasso will work if this old behavior can be restored (I've
seen it). There is very little that I can do about this.
Porting issues:
Arexx macros
Something will be done to support ARexx macros on the multi-platform
LightWave. I can't say exactly what right now since there are
several options we are considering, but your scripts will not
be made obsolete. There will also be other methods for adding
external functionality for modeling and rendering.
Machines supported
We are only working on versions for Windows using 386 or better,
Windows NT on 386 (or better) and probably R4000 or better, and
SGI probably R4000/IRIX 5.2 or better. There are obviously an
almost unlimited number of other combinations that we MIGHT
support, such as Alpha, R3000, Sparc, HP, etc. Some of these
systems may be supported, depending on demand. Although different
processors can theoretically be supported with a simple
recompile, it is rarely as simple as that. Every code generator
has its own little optomizer bugs and they all have to be tracked
down and worked around. You get enough of these and the work-
arounds start to interact. Eventually the support burden from
porting problems starts to be so high it affects real work, like
adding new features.
Macintosh versions have been mentioned. We have been considering
making a Mac version, but have NO current plans for one.
Of course, the Amiga will continue to be supported.
My machines
There was a question about what machines were being used for
development. I have an Amiga, of course, with 3 hard drives,
a DAT drive, a PAR, a Picasso, a Commodore ethernet card, and
a Fusion 40 with 32 megs. My PC is a 486DX2/66, 16 megs, a 1/2
gig drive, a CD-ROM, a Weitek 9000 based display card and an
Intel ethernet card. I also have an Indy with 32 megs, R4000,
8-bit display, floptical, CD-ROM and DAT, running IRIX 5.2.
These machines and two others are all on a thin ethernet.
I learned the hard way about display drivers. My Weitek
board is screamingly fast on Windows, but on NT I've been
forced to used hacked-up display software. It works, but
it's screwy. I might have to get a different display card.
Make sure your display cards have Windows NT drivers!
That's all I can think of for now. I can't continue to spend
the kind of time I have been on reading mail, so I may have
to unsubscribe if this port is going to happen. I'm not sure
a newsgroup would be much better since the noise would no
doubt be higher, but it's probably ultimately the right
answer. It should be comp.soft-sys.lightwave, by the way.
